When is the Global Scholars application deadline?
Early Decision I: November 15th
Early Decision II or Regular Decision: January 15th; priority deadline is December 15th
What classes do Global Scholars take together?
Students take three classes together as freshmen:
Fall: SISU-105, World Politics
Spring: SISU-206, Introduction to International Relations Research
Summer: SISU-306, Advanced International Relations Research
What is the program experience like?
The Global Scholars are first and foremost a community that allows students of like interests come together and help each other adjust to college. Students will live together and take three classes together. After the first year, students diverge and follow their own thematic and regional interests. However, students are always welcome to talk with the Program Director, whom students get to know well, and are invited to attend community meetings, sometimes even after graduation.
Can Global Scholars double major?
Global Scholars can double major or minor, depending on the requirements of the second major/minor as well as the number of transfer credits the student has. This is something students should discuss with an adviser while creating their three-year plan.
Do I have to go on the Cohort Study Abroad Trip?
Not at all. Students may choose an alternative program or remain in the US. However, we strongly encourage students to study abroad during their time at AU - we are the Global Scholars after all.
Do I have to take summer classes?
Students will likely have to take classes during at least one summer. However, this can be achieved in a variety of ways. Students may take classes on campus, take online courses, or may complete a summer study abroad. Summer courses are intensive courses lasting 6 to 7 weeks.
Can I use my financial aid in the summer?
Yes, three-year scholars are uniquely able to apply the financial aid that would have been used in their fourth year to the two summer semesters. However, not all outside scholarships are applicable to summer semester courses. AU merit awards can also cover summer tuition, study abroad, or internships for credit provided you have met the Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) requirements and are enrolled at least half time (6 credits). Merit awards are capped at tuition and do not cover living expenses.
What are community meetings like?
Community meetings are held every two weeks and include a variety of activities from alumni panels to game nights. Occasionally, events will be held off campus, such as touring the Pentagon or the annual Holiday Brunch.
